Description of Schoolwide Program

Derry Area Middle School’s Title I Schoolwide Program is based on the belief that students will
benefit most from their education when schools are given the opportunity to improve the entire
instructional program. The schoolwide option allows Derry Area Middle School to focus on the entire student
population. Title I funds are used to provide supplemental instruction in literacy and math by supporting 1
full-time intervention specialists. The task of this specialist is to increase students' reading and math
achievement and growth by providing interventions for struggling students in grades 6th - 8th.
The instruction provided is in addition to the math and ELA core classes for students.

Students who qualify for title 1 services receive small group instruction for math and or literacy remediation. Individualized goals are created based on a number of diagnostic measures, and student work toward completion of those goals during intervention class time. Students may be scheduled for intervention services for one, tow or three nine weeks periods based on specific needs. Our goal is to move students toward grade level proficiency and fill prior learning gaps that may interfere with learning. By analyzing assessment
data, school and grade-level data teams determine the programs and services that best meet the needs of each student.

Teachers are accountable for meeting the PA Core Standards and increasing what students know and
are able to do as they reach various stages in their academic development.
